The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Title II-D Technology Competitive Grant Program: Online Courses and Modules Grant for At-Risk High School Students (Round 2)

PURPOSE: the purpose of this two-year federal grant program is to improve student achievement through the effective use of technology in elementary and secondary schools. The ARRA funding in this program will be invested in projects that will ensure sustainable and continuing commitments after the funding expires.

This grant will fund projects that work collaboratively with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) to create, implement, and evaluate online courses/modules for underserved high school students in alternative education, credit recovery, or credit acceleration programs.

RESULT OF FUNDING: the funding will support the creation and implementation of online courses/modules for students most at-risk of not graduating on time and that align with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks or the Massachusetts High School Program of Studies (MassCore). Products created must be in a format that can be shared with the Department and successful models will be disseminated for use by other districts. Approximately 1,000 students from the seven grant recipients will benefit from the funding for online course/module development and implementation. Grant funds will be used for: coordinators, teacher stipends, consultants, professional development, and technology resources. Competitive grant awards range from $147,235 to $308,694. In addition to the competitive grants, one grant recipient (North Adams) will receive additional funds ($18,260) to supplement the evaluation and technical assistance portion of its Round 1 grant.
