| Purpose: |
The purpose of this federally-funded grant program is to enable districts to work with The Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy (Alliance) to plan and implement science-based approaches to teen pregnancy/sexually transmitted diseases (STD)/HIV-AIDS prevention. |
| Priority: |
The priority of this grant is to provide funds to selected high-risk districts in order to support their participation in designated activities provided by the Department and the Alliance to facilitate their selection of a science-based approach to prevention in their school/district as well as the implementation of that approach.
In applying for these funds, schools and districts ensure the following.
A team of 2-3 persons will attend the following workshops sponsored by the Department and/or the Alliance. Participants will be able to earn PDPs for attending these required workshops.
Introduction to Getting to Outcomes, February 2009 (provided by the Alliance);
A two-session workshop on Classroom Strategies for HIV-AIDS/STD/Teen Pregnancy Prevention, TBA - Note: There will be several offerings of this workshop; awardees only need to attend once. (provided by the Department);
Working Together for Latino Youth, April 15, 2009 (provided by the Alliance); and
Schools and Community-Based Organizations: Building Partnerships, TBA.
Teams should consist of persons responsible for health curriculum at the district and/or school level, i.e., health coordinator, health teacher, school/district administrator. Districts are welcome to include community partners as part of their team. |
| Eligibility: | The Department will make awards to districts:
having 2006 teen birth rates 2-3 times the state average;
with over 40% of their teen births to Latina mothers; and/or
with STD rates above the state average.

| Funding: |
A total of $55,000 has been allocated for this grant program. Grant awards of up to $9,150 are available for the following districts.

The Department reserves the right to alter the award to each funded school district. Final awards for individual grants will be contingent upon the number of proposals recommended for funding. An anticipated minimum of six (6) and a maximum of 10 grants will be awarded. |
| Fund Use: |
Funds can be used to support release time for staff (e.g., substitutes or stipends) to attend workshops, meet costs to complete the Getting to Outcomes process, purchase of science-based curricula, and staff training on these curricula. |
