Summer Food Service Program Expansion Grant for Existing Sponsors

Purpose: The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to encourage school districts and previous sponsors of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to increase participation in the program by serving more children per day and to extend the length of the Summer Food Service Program.
Priorities:

Priorities are to:

  1. increase participation of students by increasing Average Daily Participation by:

    1. involving a range of community members (city government, parks and recreation departments, community agencies, school constituents, students, teachers, administrators, food service staff, and families); and

    2. planning to expand other activities at the Food Service site;

  2. extend the length of the SFSP for the full summer vacation;

  3. increase the number of days the program is operational;

  4. provide training to site supervisors;

  5. increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains in the meal service; and

  6. support School Food Authorities (SFA) that offer school breakfast and after-school snack programs during the academic year.*

Eligibility: School Food Authorities eligible to sponsor Summer Food Service Programs and returning Summer Food Program Sponsors may apply.
Funding:

Approximately $300,000 is available. Grant funds are prioritized to districts with high levels of students (50% or higher) who are eligible for free or reduced price meals.

Fund Use: Funds shall be used to design and implement a plan or project that will encompass the entire summer vacation period and expand sustainable participation in the summer feeding program. Funds may be used for outreach expense. An outreach intern may be hired. Costs associated with the marketing or publicizing the availability of the SFSP or activities to promote participation in the SFSP; and/or to provide training for site supervisors; and/or to purchase equipment necessary for food safety transportation, heating, cooking, holding, serving, packaging and refrigeration/freezing of foods used in the SFSP may be requested. If funding is requested for equipment that will be needed in the lunch program, the school should pro-rate the cost to reflect its use for summers. If the use will be for the school breakfast or the after-school snack program, identify the proportional use of each. Awards must be encumbered by June 30, 2009.
