Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2009

School Redesign and Restructuring: Commonwealth Pilot Schools Grant
Fund Code: 510-D

Purpose: The purpose of this federal grant program is to provide funds to current Commonwealth Pilot Schools to support redesign and restructuring efforts as outlined in the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education or Department-approved design plans.
Priorities:

Grant funds can be used to support the following categories that are connected to the schools' original design plans:

  1. development of professional learning communities;

  2. strengthening of instructional practices;

  3. student assessment systems (interim and formative);

  4. academic interventions and supports;

  5. non-academic student support services; or

  6. school organization and culture.

Eligibility: Schools with current Commonwealth Pilot School status are eligible to apply.
Funding:

Grants awards of up to $150,000 are available for each of the following schools.

  • Academy Middle School
Fitchburg
  • Duggan Middle School
Springfield
  • English High School
Boston
  • Homer Street School
Springfield
Fund Use:

Fund use should be consistent with the priorities described above, including:

  1. costs associated with professional development and training;

  2. planning activities and administrative costs associated with management of initiatives;

  3. stipends for district staff working outside contractual obligations;

  4. travel and mileage associated with training; and

  5. supplies related to grant activities.
