| PURPOSE: The purpose of the state-funded John Silber Early Reading Initiative is to support identified school districts and schools in implementing proven scientifically based methods of reading instruction in K-3 classrooms in order to prevent reading difficulties and to have all students be proficient readers by the end of grade three. The John Silber Early Reading Initiative program is consistent with the federal Reading First Initiative. |

The schools are primarily those identified as 2007 Commonwealth Priority for corrective action or restructuring in the aggregate for English Language Arts that serve grade 3 or those identified for restructuring based on subgroups that serve grade 3. Funds will support the teaching of scientifically based methods of reading to 5,443 students by 241 teachers. Awards range from $90,000 to $600,000. |
