Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2008

Gifted and Talented: Planning
Fund Code: 586

Purpose: The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to provide funding for districts committed to building basic knowledge and understanding of how to identify and serve a broad range of advanced/gifted students throughout the district, beginning with professional development.
Priorities: Priority will be given to districts with minimal or no services provided currently to advanced/gifted students and that demonstrate a district-wide commitment to developing a systemic program to identify and serve the academic needs of their advanced/gifted students beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. Highest priority will be given to districts that propose to train a team of 3-5 educators, including teachers, principals, and district personnel, who will be instrumental in the planning and implementation of a gifted and talented program.
Eligibility: All school districts, charter schools, and educational collaboratives that provide no/minimal services to advanced/gifted students are eligible to apply.
Funding: A total of $257,500 is available. Approximately 15 to 20 grants will be awarded. Each applicant may submit a proposal for up to $15,000.
Fund Use: Funds may be used to cover costs of college level courses focused on identifying, understanding, and meeting the needs of advanced/gifted students (tuition, fees, books, travel). Funds may be used for stipends for follow-up team meetings, subsequent to the coursework, to develop a program to meet the needs of advanced/gifted students in the school district.
