Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2008

Fund Code - 549: Summer Food Service Program Start-Up Grant for Existing Sponsors and/or New Sponsors
Fund Code: 549

Purpose: The purpose of this state-funded Start-Up grant program is to encourage Summer Food Service Program sponsoring agencies to sponsor new sites and thereby increase program availability to students not currently receiving program services.
Priorities:

Priorities are to:

  1. increase the Average Daily Participation (ADP);

  2. support entities that provide year-round food programs;

  3. provide nutritious meals to children in the summer months; and

  4. support programs that serve the highest number of eligible children.

Eligibility:

The Start-Up grants are available to agencies newly sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program or agencies serving sites that did not participate in previous years' Summer Food Service Program. Applicants proposing sites serving a significant low-income population shall receive priority consideration.

  1. The Sponsor and proposed feeding sites did not participate in prior years SFSP and will serve a low-income population.

  2. Site serves a low-income area not previously served in the SFSP and will increase SFSP participation.

  3. A new site is required in the area because existing sites are over capacity.

  4. Re-location of a previously participating site will benefit delivery of SFSP to additional low-income students not served previously.

  5. The site participated in SFSP in prior years under another SFSP sponsor, however, a change in sponsorship is beneficial to the operation of the SFSP because:

    1. a change in sponsorship of the site will improve SFSP services provided;

    2. the population served will differ under the proposed new sponsorship; and/or

    3. site operation by proposed new sponsorship will improve the quality of meal service or the effectiveness of site operation and increase the number of low-income students served.

Funding:

Approximately $110,000 is available. Funding eligibility will be dependent upon program duration and the projected number of students to be served, as follows:

Up to 100 children $1,500
101-200$2,000
201 or more children $2,500
Fund Use: Applicants may apply for a maximum of $2,500 per newly proposed site. Grants shall be used for costs incurred in the planning and implementation of effective programs. Awards must be encumbered by June 30, 2008.
