| Purpose: | The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to provide academically at-risk high school students with school and structured work-based learning experiences to better prepare them for higher education and high skilled, high wage jobs that offer career growth. |
| Priorities: | Programs must:
give priority to serving high school students who are academically at-risk. Academically at-risk students are those who have either failed (MCAS Level 1) or have scored in the Needs Improvement (MCAS Level 2) range on the MCAS;
provide supplementary, supportive services that assist high school students to make successful transitions to higher education and employment through structured internships that offer career development growth;
collaborate among secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, business, labor, Workforce Investment Boards, Youth Councils, and employment and training programs to create opportunities for students to secure higher education and employment in high wage, emerging career areas;
support increased student academic performance through activities connected to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks;
use the Massachusetts Work-Based Learning Plan with internships;
incorporate the vision of the Massachusetts Education Reform Act in organizational goals; and
provide an end-of-year report outlining FY2008 goals achieved and any exceptional practices or results with the submission of this year's grant proposal. |
| Eligibility: | Organizations eligible currently to apply for School-to-Work Transition Other Non-Competitive Grants are:
Amer-I-Can, Inc.;
Blue Hills Local School to Career Partnership;
the Commonwealth Corporation (CS2)/Diploma Plus;
Cape Cod Community College Diploma Plus;
Junior Achievement of Central, Eastern, and Western MA;
Jobs for Bay State Graduates, Inc.;
and MY TURN. |
| Funding: | Total funding is $2,254,566. The Massachusetts legislation that authorized the School-to-Work Transition Programs contains a matching funds requirement. The required amount of matching funds is determined by the relative equalized valuation per capita of the communities to be served. |
| Fund Use: | Funds must be used in accordance with the Massachusetts legislative language that authorizes School-to-Work Transition Programs and the purpose and priorities outlined above. |
