Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2008

Special Assistance: Special Education Program Review Preparation
Fund Code: 256

Purpose: Federal special education funds will assist public school districts, charter schools, and Department of Education approved private special education schools in preparing for a scheduled Special Education Program Review that will determine compliance with state and federal special education requirements.
Priorities:

Priorities are to:

  1. provide consultation to administrators to facilitate the preparation for a Department special education program review visit;

  2. allow for the allocation of additional time and resources necessary for staff to prepare special education documentation and student records in response to monitoring standards; and

  3. support the required preliminary self-assessment with respect to compliance with the special education monitoring standards.

Eligibility:

Eligible to apply are public school districts, charter schools, or Department-approved private special education schools that:

  • are scheduled to receive a Special Education Program Review in the 2008-2009 school year;

  • (for public school districts only) have met requirements to receive FY2008 Special Education Entitlement grant funds (Fund Code: 240).

Those schools or school districts scheduled to pilot the Department's Web-Based Monitoring System may apply for additional funding in the amount of $2,500.

Funding:

Approximately $300,000 will be available to school districts, charter schools, and Department-approved private special education schools through this grant program. Eligible schools and districts may request funds as follows.

Fund Use: Funds may be used for stipends for district or school staff for time spent outside of time contracted for with the school or district, contractual services, supplies and materials, printing, and photocopying. Funds may not be used for staff salaries or benefits, instructional materials, furniture, computer hardware, or equipment. Funds may not be used to pay administrators for managing this grant or for expenses that have been incurred prior to the approval of this grant application.

Proposals must be received at the Department by 5:00 p.m. on the final date due.
