Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2007

Javits Gifted and Talented Education
Fund Code: 584

Purpose: The purpose of this federal grant program is to raise the achievement of gifted students in preschool to grade 8 by expanding educators' knowledge of research-based approaches to the identification of gifted students, advanced curriculum, instruction, and assessment for gifted students, and the organization and evaluation of programs and services for gifted students.
Priorities:

Priority will be given to proposals that:

  1. demonstrate awareness of current research in the field of education for gifted students;

  2. explain how low-income, minority, disabled, and limited English proficient students will be identified for participation in the project;

  3. demonstrate a working partnership among P-16 educators and parents; and

  4. have explicit plans for disseminating the district's gifted education initiatives to other districts.

Eligibility: The Boston, Framingham, Marlborough, and Medford Public Schools, and Lowell Community Charter Public School, partners in the federal grant, are eligible to apply.
Funding: A total of $150,000 is available. Districts may apply for up to $30,000.
Fund Use: Funds may be used for: consultants for professional development or program evaluation; materials for identification, instruction, or assessment of students; fees for programs or online instruction for students; software; stipends; substitutes; in-state and out-of-state travel for consultants or educators observing or researching programs for gifted students; project dissemination; and project administration. Administration costs should not exceed 10% of the budget. Curriculum development, computers and computer equipment, fees or travel expenses for competitions, and expenses for after-school activities for students are not allowable grant expenditures.
