| Purpose: |
The purpose of this federal grant program is to provide substantial financial support for innovative and comprehensive school level redesign and restructuring efforts at the state's most critical Title I schools. This grant opportunity is likely to provide multiple years of funding so capacity for continued improvement can be developed at each school.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) will direct the award of these grants to fund Summer Semester programs that build upon current school improvement investments and support a school's capacity to implement successfully changes designed to enhance student achievement. |
| Priorities: |
Priority will be given to schools that develop and implement an innovative and comprehensive Summer Semester program that:
provides high quality learning opportunities designed to improve student academic outcomes;
develops 21st Century Skills;
engages students in programs not otherwise available to them during the summer months;
includes an embedded professional development component for participating teachers;
supports opportunities for professional collaboration and learning between the participating district and other districts; and
strengthens three of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's enabling (essential) conditions designed to foster improvements in student achievement, specifically:
a system of formative assessments;
collaborative time for educators; and
a system of tiered intervention and safety net programs for students who are not meeting grade level expectations.

| Eligibility: |
One Title I Commonwealth Priority School (a school identified for Corrective Action or Restructuring in the aggregate student population) or a Title I school in Corrective Action or Restructuring for subgroups that is serving students coming from one or more Commonwealth Priority School(s) in the same district. |
| Funding: | Grants will be a minimum of $50,000 per school. |
| Fund Use: |
Fund use must be consistent with the priorities described above and may include:
costs associated with professional development and training;
stipends for teachers beyond contractual hours;
contractual services;
substitutes;
travel and mileage associated with training;
administrative costs associated with management of initiatives; and
materials or supplies related to the overall grant proposal.
Other expenditures related specifically to the proposed initiative will be considered in context. |
