Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2008

State Targeted Assistance Commonwealth Pilot School Planning and Support Grant
Fund Code: 221-E

Purpose:

The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to provide funds to:

  1. current Commonwealth Pilot Schools to support the newly formed governance boards' efforts; and

  2. potential Commonwealth Pilot Schools for planning and pre-implementation activities related to redesigned governance structures.

Priorities:

Grant funds can be used to support the following categories:

  1. school Design Team work and planning sessions;

  2. development of professional learning communities;

  3. instructional practices;

  4. assessment (interim and formative);

  5. non-academic student support services;

  6. academic Interventions and supports; and

  7. school organization and culture.

Eligibility: Schools with current Commonwealth Pilot School status and schools that are planning a conversion to Commonwealth Pilot status in September 2008 are eligible to apply.
Funding:

Grants awards are available for the following schools.

*Academy Middle SchoolFitchburg $20,000
*Duggan Middle School Springfield$20,000
*English High School Boston$30,000
*Putnam High School Springfield $50,000
*Homer Street School Springfield $35,000
Fund Use:

Fund use should be consistent with the priorities described above, including:

  1. costs associated with professional development and training;

  2. planning activities, administrative costs associated with management of initiatives;

  3. travel and mileage associated with training;

  4. stipends for district staff working outside contractual obligations; and

  5. supplies related to the overall grant proposal.

A minimum amount of the grant award for each current Commonwealth Pilot School must be reserved for the Governance Team at the individual school to control and determine use. Remaining funds of the grant award are to support other costs associated with the Commonwealth Pilot model as determined by school and district administrators. These minimums are:

*Academy Middle School $10,000 minimum of grant award
*Duggan Middle School $10,000 minimum of grant award
*English High School $20,000 minimum of grant award
*Putnam High School $30,000 minimum of grant award
Project Duration:

If you intend to use a portion of these funds during July and/or August 2008, the following items need to be submitted:

  1. Two Part I - General - Program Unit Signature Page - Standard Contract Form and Application for Program Grants

    School Year Program: Approval - 6/30/08; and

    Summer Program: 7/1/08 - 8/31/08.

  2. Two Budget Detail Forms

    School Year Program: expenditures from Approval - 6/30/08; and

    Summer Program: expenditures from 7/1/08 - 8/31/08.
