| Purpose: |
The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to support improvement efforts of currently designated and newly identified Commonwealth Priority Schools. (A Commonwealth Priority School is any school that has a No Child Left Behind (NCLB) accountability status of Corrective Action or Restructuring in English language arts and/or mathematics for students in the aggregate) or a school retained in such status by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. |
| Priority: |
The priority is to support the implementation of improvement plans and related strategies at Commonwealth Priority Schools in order to improve student achievement. Funds are intended to be used as a discretionary school improvement resource by Principals to support the implementation of initiatives at the school level. Activities could include, but are not limited to, the following.
Implementation of district planned and directed improvement initiatives
Staff and consultants to support data analysis, program design, evaluation of curriculum and instructional practice, or school management
Activities prior to the opening of the 2008-2009 school year that better prepare students and/or parents for the new school year

| Eligibility: |
The Department will make awards of up to $10,000 per school. A complete list of eligible schools is attached at Additional Information.
Note: Current Commonwealth Pilot Schools, Priority I status schools, or schools recommended for Priority I status are not eligible for this grant. |
| Funding: |
The Department estimates that up to $1,000,000 will be available to fund a maximum of 100 Commonwealth Priority Schools. |
| Fund Use: |
Fund use must be consistent with the priorities described above and may include costs associated with professional development and training, administrative costs associated with management of initiatives, travel and mileage associated with training, stipends for teachers beyond contractual hours, and supplies related to the overall grant proposal. |
| Project Duration: | Funds must be used during July and/or August 2008. |
