Safe and Supportive Learning Environments Competitive

PURPOSE: The purpose of this competitive grant program is to assist school districts with the development and establishment of comprehensive programs to:

  1. help prevent violence in schools, from whatever causes; and

  2. promote school safety and/or in-school programs and services to address, within the general education school program, the educational and psycho-social needs of students whose behavior interferes with learning, particularly those who are suffering from the traumatic effects of exposure to violence.

RESULT OF FUNDING: The funding will support programs to address the individual needs of traumatized students and to increase staff capacity to create safe and supportive school environments for all students. Each of the three (3) districts receiving funds will target the grant use in a school determined to be in need of extra support for students and staff, as well as provide district support. Grant funds will be used for program coordinators, staff stipends, consultants and specialists for staff professional development, and supplies for staff training. Grant awards range from $15,000 to $25,000.
