Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2008

Fund Code: 701 (Increases)
Quality Full-Day Kindergarten - Increases
(FY2008 - State)

TOTAL INCREASE AMOUNT: $535,000 (State)
PURPOSE: The purpose of this state-funded grant program is to support high quality educational programs for children in full-day kindergarten by: improving the quality of curriculum and classroom environment; providing continuity of curriculum from preschool through grades one to three; and developing other programmatic components of the kindergarten grant program. (Full-day kindergarten is defined as a minimum of 5 instructional hours, 5 days a week, 180-days/school year.)
RESULT OF FUNDING: These one-time increases provide 29 high-priority districts with funds to support quality enhancements, such as: professional development; development and training in curriculum and assessment; vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum and assessment; inclusion; family engagement; progress towards NAEYC accreditation; and purchase of classroom materials. High priority districts are identified as those not meeting the four MCAS state targets for 3rd and 4th grade English language arts and mathematics. Funds for the one-time increases resulted from districts not accepting their allocation, districts opening fewer classrooms than they proposed, as well as supplemental and rollover funds being added to the account after the original appropriation. Increases range from $636 to $110,142, depending on the number of classrooms being served.
