Community Service-Learning Planning/Implementation School-Based Program

PURPOSE: The purpose of this Learn and Serve America grant program is to:

  1. increase the practice of service-learning as a methodology for implementing the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, K-12;

  2. support the institutionalization and sustainability of service-learning district-wide;

  3. improve the quality of service-learning initiatives;

  4. provide more opportunities for low-income students to engage in service-learning; and

  5. identify and address significant barriers to student achievement and, through service-learning and other activities, implement solutions to those barriers.

RESULT OF FUNDING: This grant will assist four (4) districts to engage students in their learning and in their communities by implementing Community Service-Learning as a teaching methodology and by supporting professional development, project implementation, and other related activities. Through these grants, approximately 60 teachers will engage 550 students in service projects connected to curriculum. Grant awards range from $9,617 to $10,500.
