Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2007

Memorandum

To: Interested Parties
From: David P. Driscoll, Commissioner of Education
Date: March 6, 2006
Subject: Title II-B: Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant Opportunity

I am pleased to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Massachusetts Mathematics and Science Partnerships (MMSP) Program, funded through Title II, Part B of the federal education act, No Child Left Behind.

The purpose of the MMSP program is to improve student achievement in mathematics, science, and technology/engineering through intensive, high-quality professional development activities that focus on deepening teachers' content knowledge. MMSP partnerships must include a high need school district and a mathematics, science, or engineering department from an institution of higher education.

Each MMSP partnership will develop and implement an effective and sustained course of study for inservice teachers of mathematics, science, and technology/engineering and integrate the course of studies into schools of arts and sciences and/or education at institutions of higher education. The priority for this round of funding is Science and Technology/Engineering.

Over the last three years, the Department awarded ten partnerships across the state. This year approximately $1,500,000 is available to fund the next cohort of partnerships on a competitive basis. Grants will be awarded for a period of up to three years based on successful progress towards meeting the goals established for the program and upon funding appropriation. The date due for submission will be Monday, May 8, 2006.

An information session will be held at the Department of Education in Malden on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To registration for the session please go to http://www.doe.mass.edu/conference/?Conference. For further program information about the Title II-B program, please contact Katherine Richard, Statewide Mathematics Coordinator, at krichard@doe.mass.edu or 781-338-3494.
