Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2006

Dropout Prevention and Alternative Education Self-Assessment Project
Fund Code: 790-B

Purpose: The purpose of this grant program is to support the creation of a workgroup to carry out a self-assessment of dropouts/dropout prevention and alternative education. The workgroup may include a member of the school committee, school principal/vice principal, homeless liaison, school guidance counselors or social workers, teachers, parents, students, consultants, and community stakeholders.
Priorities:

Applications funded through this grant shall address the following two main priorities:

  1. analysis of dropouts and dropout prevention, that includes an analysis of:

    1. current policies and procedures that directly and indirectly impact students dropping out;

    2. the exit process for a student seeking to leave school;

    3. the use of partnerships with external organizations;

    4. parent outreach and involvement; and

    5. the effectiveness of current practices and strategies to recover students who have dropped out.

  2. examination of the use of alternative education programs, that includes:

    1. access to alternative education;

    2. referral and selection process for the program; and

    3. use of alternative education as a component of a school or districtwide dropout prevention and/or recovery strategy.

Eligibility: Public school districts are eligible to apply on behalf of a school listed on the attached eligibility list. Schools included on the list had: 1. an annual dropout rate of at least 5.0% in four of the five most recent school years with available dropout data (1999-2000 to 2003-2004 school years); and 2. a high school enrollment of at least 500 students.
Funding:

An estimated amount of $50,000 is available. Applicants may apply for funding up to $3,000-$5000 per eligible school.

The Department reserves the right to alter the award to each funded school district.

Fund Use:

Funds may be used for:

  • stipends for participation in the self-assessment workgroup;

  • substitutes for teachers participating in the workgroup;

  • consultation services;

  • administrative assistance; and

  • supplies.

  • Districts accepting Fund Code 790-B funds must:

    • attend the April 13, 2006 Enhancing Alternative Education state conference, at Holy Cross in Worcester (at least one staff member representing a school); and

    • submit a report on district findings and planned action steps to the Department by the end of the project (6/30/2006).
